Everybody likes to write stories every now and then, and I guess I’m no exception.

Sam Goldstein, 1938

“My Friend Was A Bootlegger: Crime and Community in the Jewish Bronx” is a microhistorical narrative that brings together the stories of a bitter communist poet, a bootlegger employed by one of New York’s top gangsters, and a typical Jewish man living within his close-knit neighborhood. I created these illustrations to accompany the paper and enhance the quirk, vibrance, and community that permeated the early Bronx years. Interested in reading the story? Reach out and let me know.
